B.C. Child Car Seat Law

Please note that the law is the minimum standard by which we measure safety, so it is up to each family to decide when their own child is ready to be moved to the next stage of seating.

BC Child Seat Law changed in July 2008 and now requires all children to remain in a rear facing child seat until they reach their first birthday and a minimum of 20lbs. Having said that, parents can choose to keep a child rear facing until he/she reaches the upper weight limit for the seat in rear facing mode, as we know that statistically, children survive car crashes very well in rear facing child seats.

Once turned around, children must stay harnessed in a forward facing child seat until they reach a minimum of 40lbs, no matter what their age.We do not recommend however, putting a 40lb 3 year old in a booster seat, unless you enjoy watching them undo their seat belt and climb into the front seat as you are barreling down the freeway!

Once a child moves into a booster seat, he or she must use one until their 9th birthday or until they reach 4’9” or 145cm in height.

Once a child moves out of a booster seat and into a seat belt only, it is strongly recommended that all children remain in the back seat until they reach at least 12 years of age.
